Cross Country

ATC is pleased to offer a fall cross country club, which is designed to introduce cross country fundamentals, conditioning, and opportunities to participate in several USATF cross country races. Our mission is to provide a positive environment for our athletes to gain track and field/cross country experience, build self-confidence, make new friends, and develop a lifelong enjoyment of running.

Athletes do not need to be a resident of Ankeny or attend Ankeny Community School District to participate.

Mid-September to Mid-November
Eligibility: ages 9-18
Cost:  $50
Limit: 50 athletes

What To Bring: Athletes should bring water, running shoes, and a GPS watch (optional). Athletes should also wear layers, as weather will vary during the season. It is important to start practice promptly; please have your child to practice 10 minutes early to use the restroom, change shoes, or ask the coach a question.

What to Expect: Each practice will begin with a warm-up run and dynamic stretching. Workouts will consist of skills, drills, and games to improve endurance. Practice ends with cool-down stretches and conditioning.

Inclement Weather Policy: ATC will attempt to post weather cancellations via our Facebook page, Twitter, and email by 5:00 pm. Practice will be stopped if there is heavy rain and/or lightning in the immediate area.

Note: Requires a USATF membership if trying to qualify for National meet
December 9 USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships
Location: Tallahassee, FL

Meet Distance: The distance run at the meet depends on the athlete’s year of birth (see USATF age divisions):

  • 9-12: 3000 meters (3k)
  • 13-14: 4000 meters (4k)
  • 15-18: 5000 meters (5k)

What To Expect: Athlete and spectator fees are typically $5. Most meets follow a rolling schedule, meaning that each event will start immediately after the previous event was completed. Parents and athletes are responsible for listening for the XC event check-in time and location.

Optional: A USATF membership is required to participate in the USATF Association Championship if the athlete wants to try to qualify for the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, FL on December 9, 2017.

Note: If membership is purchased after November 1, it will be good through December 2018.

All athletes will receive a navy blue long-sleeved Competitor t-shirt as part of registration.

Running Shoes
Please invest in a good pair of running shoes. Suggested locations can be found on our track and field Apparel page. Spikes are optional.

At a minimum, we request you purchase a tank top to wear at meets. Shorts will also be available for purchase or you can wear your own shorts/compression shorts/tights. Uniforms can be ordered from the Wee's Tees webstore at Deadline: Tuesday September 5th, 2017
